The Acquisition and Development of the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, 1952-1967

Carl Buchheister relates information, tales, and anecdotes ranging from the acquisition of the first sanctuary property to some of the more colorful characters who have worked at and for National Audubon Society at the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary.

The beauty, mystery, and natural history of the Society's famous Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary are portrayed here in an article by Sandy Sprunt, first printed in Audubon magazine, January 1961.

Sam Whidden's Recollections

Sam was seven years old when his father, an open-range cattle rancher, moved his family into the Corkscrew area in 1910. Sam carried on the family tradition of grazing cattle, farming, and hunting in and around what is now Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary for over 70 years. He also became an Audubon warden and has probably seen more of Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary than any other human being. These are his recollections of the area as told to Ed Carlson during a visit to the sanctuary's back country in 1982.

Dry season, wet season

"It sounds simple, the annual cycle of life in Corkscrew Swamp; but the wife of an Audubon ecologist discovers otherwise." Linda Duever came to Corkscrew in 1973 with her husband Mike to do an ecological analysis of Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and in the process, she discovered intense thunderstorms, rattlesnakes, and an enchanted forest. This article, printed in the November 1978 issue of Audubon magazine, raises questions we are still trying to answer 30 years later.
